CHAPEL
St John did much to encourage the veneration of local saints in the many European countries where he worked. This is why our chapel (at the front of the church through the door on the right) is dedicated to our local saints, All the Saints Who Have Shone Forth in the Isles.
This chapel tends to be used for week-day and Saturday evening services (with some exceptions).
The Frescoes
In June 2026, a major work of renovation was completed in the chapel, with the installation of a comprehensive cycle of frescoes. This has been made possible through the dedication and hard work of Deacon Antonie Brailescu and Alban Phillips. Their work has helped create a beautiful and prayerful home for the worship of God, and we thank them for their faithful service.
The frescoes on the ceiling show the Twelve Great Feasts and the wall over the altar shows the Mother of God, as she is the altar, carrying Christ inside her. Also on the altar walls are St Spyridon, St Nicholas, St Basil the Great, St Gregory the Theologian and St John Chrysostom. Along the side walls and the back wall, we see:
Apostles: St Andrew the First-Called, St Aristobulus of Britain.
Bishops: St Ninian of Scotland, St Columba of Iona, St Brendan the Voyager, St Patrick of Ireland, St David of Wales, St Augustine of Canterbury, St Theodore of Tarsus, St Aidan of Lindisfarne, St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, St Botolph of Iken, St Felix, Apostle of East Anglia, St Cedd, Apostle of Essex, St Chad of Mercia, St Bede the Venerable, St Swithun of Winchester, St John of Beverley.
Martyrs: St George the Great Martyr, St Alban the Protomartyr, St Edmund, King of East Anglia, St Edward the Martyr, King of England.
Hermit: St Guthlac of Crowland
Nuns: St Brigid of Ireland, St Audrey of Ely, St Hilda of Whitby, St Osyth of Chich, St Frideswide of Oxford.
